Hi!

This survey will take about 3-5 minutes to complete.

About Industrial Training (IT) Restructuring Initiative
The Co-op team has noted that the recruitment period has become earlier and more hectic in recent years. The extensive recruitment process is taking more of the Co-op Scholars’ time, and for some scholars, is beginning to compete for time/focus on IT3 activities. This proves problematic for both Scholars and Sponsors.

To illustrate the difference between the Current model and the New proposed model, please open this link and continue to fill this survey.

Details on new proposed model
The new model for IT placements proposes:
* IT3 moves from first semester in final year to second semester in third year.
* IT2 moves from second semester in third year to first semester in third year.
* IT1 remains the same.

All programs will still have 18 months (72 weeks) Industrial Training over three IT placements (24 weeks each) with three different Sponsors.

Benefits of the new model
* IT3 – the third and final period of Industrial Training for BIT and ISM Scholars – is the time for Sponsors to obtain the greatest return on their investment. Moving IT3 away from the recruitment period and final year excitement will allow Scholars to be more productive as they are able to concentrate far more effectively on their work for their Sponsor Company.
* All IT placements will have occurred before recruitment takes place. This allows Scholars to experience a wider range of work environments and for Sponsors to work with all allocated Scholars before the pressures of the graduate recruitment period.

Negatives of the new model
* Scholars will have completed less course work before IT2 and IT3 placements meaning Scholars would not be able to gain the required level of technical/ professional skills required in order to be able to undertake the variety of tasks normally allocated to IT2 and IT3.
* Scholars will be working full time for a whole calendar year and may feel disconnected from the university and their peers as a result.
* Scholars may disconnect from the Co-op Program and their Sponsors after IT responsibilities are completed at the end of third year, leading to Scholars not engaging in Sponsor recruitment or Co-op activities/initiatives in 4th year.

Decision
The Co-op office is seeking to consult widely with Scholars and the full range of Sponsors before formalising any alternative IT models. The proposal will be circulated with BITSA and the BIT/ISM Sponsors for comment and the Co-op office aim to have a decision and report on this issue by the next Sponsor meeting, 10 July 2008.
