INFORMATION TO PARTICIPANTS

Dear Participant,

We are UWS Master of Osteopathy researchers, our names are Rhys Donovan & Kathryn Freestone, and we would like to invite you to complete this questionnaire. This questionnaire should take no longer than 5 – 10 minutes to complete.

The aims of this study are:
1: To understand what the general population perceive about therapeutic joint manipulation as provided by a qualified practitioner.
2: To gain a greater knowledge of those who habitually manipulate their joints.

Therapeutic joint manipulation is a treatment procedure performed by a range of physical therapists: osteopaths, chiropractors and manipulative physiotherapists. This technique involves a forceful, yet painless thrust which is applied to a joint within your body. As a result of this a ‘popping’ or ‘cracking’ sound is usually heard.
Habitual joint manipulation is where people regularly 'pop' or 'crack' their own joints, for example some people may 'crack' their knuckles, or another joint in their body.

Australian residents are being sent this questionnaire via email asking for their personal experiences and opinions of therapeutic joint manipulation and habitual joint manipulation. Questions 1 – 12 relate to therapeutic joint manipulation while questions 13 – 33 relate to habitual joint manipulation. All questions have multiple choice answers needing only the most correct response to be selected; some questions have multiple options. Please return this questionnaire via email to the address it was sent from, or to one of the email addresses at the bottom of this page.

There are no foreseen risks involved with completing this questionnaire.
This questionnaire is completely ANONYMOUS – your responses will not be able to be linked to your contact details by the researchers. Return of the questionnaire will be taken as IMPLIED CONSENT that you agree to participate in this study; doing so is completely OPTIONAL. Regardless of whether or not you choose to complete this questionnaire you will not be contacted any further.
