Palliative Care is the holistic care of a patient suffering from a disease, which carries a heavy symptom burden. This care may be used for patients with any disease, and aims to treat the symptoms making the life more comfortable. Palliation becomes all the more important when the patient suffers from chronic and severely debilitating diseases like cancer or AIDS. Presently the focus of palliative care is on Cancer, yet there are very few palliative care centres in the country. Even when the centres are there, availability of medicines is a problem, when both these are present, patients do not come for palliation. Palliative care centres are not advertised and hence knowledge about them spreads very slowly by word of mouth, and by referral from attending oncologists, none the less than 1% cancer patients have access to palliative care. Most workers in the field of palliation are trying to increase the awareness of palliative care among doctors, and this survey is an effort in that direction. Taking part in this survey is totally voluntary and this study poses less than minimum risk to participants. You are invited to take part in this survey for the benefit of cancer patients, in the country. Cancer is a very pervasive disease and recognizes no boundaries of gender, age, education, social status, wealth or religion. We are conducting this survey is that it may help in establishing more palliative care centres and increasing the reach of palliative care in the affected population.
