All members of TEAM no. 7 are invited to participate in this survey in order to map their cultural diferences and prepare the team project on the subject of Managing across Cultures.

This survey is based on the Cultural Orientation Framework described on page 58 of the textbook.

Due to the limitations of the free version of this software, only a limited number of questions were included. Additional questions, if needed for more detailed mapping, can be included in subsequent questionnaires.

Relation to the Environment

How do you relate to the world around you? (This includes the physical world, but also the economic and social world)
 
Harmony - The environment is a complex system of which we are one part. Our actions should keep the system in balance, then everything will work well.
 
Mastery - The environment is separate from us, and something to be managed. Our actions should influence and control the environment to get things to work well.
 
Subjugation - The environment and ourselves in it are influenced or controlled by some other force, such as God or fate. Our actions should be consistent with that other force, and should implement the plans.
 
 
 
Relations among people

How do you think about relationships of power and responsibility among people?
 
Collective - People in the group should be responsible for each other, and everyone is responsible to fulfill the group's needs. The group may be the extended family, the community, or any other large group.
 
Individual - Each of us should be responsible for him- or herself alone, and perhaps the immediate family if necessary. society works better if everybody looks after him- or herself.
 
Hierarchy - Power and responsibility are arranged such that those above have power over those below, and responsibility for them. Those below should obey the wishes of those above.
 
 
 
Mode of activity

What is the basic sequence of activity you agree to use with your group?
 
Doing - It is important to jump into action. When in doubt, do something.
 
Thinking - It is important to plan carefully, before taking action. When in doubt, plan and analyze.
 
Being - It is important to do things in their own time, to express spontaneity. When in doubt, do what feels right.
 
 
 
Nature of humans

What is the basic, underlying nature of the human condition?
 
Good - People are basically good. When people do bad things, it is the environment that is influencing them.
 
Neutral - People are mixed or neutral. The environment influences whether they become bad or good.
 
Evil - People are basically evil. People should try to overcome their evil nature and do good things.
 
 
Nature of humans - Changeable / Unchangeable

People's underlying nature can be changed: good people ca turn bad and vice versa.

How do you use time horizons in decision-making?
 
Past - It is best to make decisions based on tradition or past precedent.
 
Present - It is best to make decisions based on present needs.

How do you measure and use time?
 
Monochronic - I prefer to do one thing at a time, then move to the next. Punctuality is important.
 
Polychronic - I do many things at a time. Punctuality is less important than doing things in their time.
 
 
 
Space

How do you see and use physical space?
 
Private - Space and the things in it belong to people. Privacy and ownership are important.
 
Public - Space and the things in it belong to everyone. Sharing is important.
 
Mixed - I use public space for some things, private for others.
