Section II: Choices of Tomato Types |
| |
The production of non-organic and organic tomatoes may involve applications of synthetic-chemical fertilizer and pesticides. Those chemicals may pose health risks such as ---birth defects ---fetal death ---neurodevelopmental disorder,
and environmental risks such as ---air pollution ---ground water pollution ---soil degradation ---threats to animal species.
The next 4 questions ask you to choose among three types of greenhouse vine-ripened tomatoes as shown in the lower left figure. For each question, suppose you are shopping for greenhouse vine-ripened tomatoes in a grocery store, and the three types are the only available ones in the store.
The tomato types will be presented in a figure. They differ in price and total amount of chemical fertilizer and pesticides applied in their production, and other characteristics, e.g. taste, appearance, nutritional contents and chemical residue, are the same. As shown in the lower right figure, each type of tomato is described by application of chemical pesticide and fertilizer as well as price, all in a row. Two numbers are given for the application of pesticides or fertilizer: one for the percentage of reduction from current situation, and the other for total amount of application in pounds per acre per year.
Based on this information, please answer questions 5-8 in the next four pages. Please try to make your choices as if you would be required to pay the price associated with the type of tomatoes. If the three types you are given are not appealing, please select not to purchase any type.
