Dear parents/caregivers,
High Hopes Dance Troupe was part of Desert Friends for the Developmentally Disabled, a non-profit 501(c)3. It was created with the intent of being a free, fun weekly social program for disabled young adults and older. Since DFDD was disolved, we've also lost funding to pay for shirts, performance props, last minute get-togethers and any larger social events along with the inability to raise funds as a non-profit. We do have some options. We are looking to you for your thoughts and ideas. Please read all questions and answer. You may have the same answer for more than one.

Thank you very much for your time and support.
Please be sure to join our facebook page at High Hopes Dance Troupe.

Should High Hopes Dance Troupe regain a non-profit status?

Advantage: Legally raise money to pay for shirts, props, social events, tax exemption for purchases, tax receipts for donors, join in activities to raise money for non-profits and insurance for liability

Disadvantage: Write a mission, petition for non-profit status, hold regular meetings, establish board of directors, keep minutes, file reports with IRS and cost to become a 501 c 3

Should HHDT align with an existing organization?

The organization we align with would act as a fiscal sponsor which means we can use their 501 c 3 designation to raise money, but they will control and delegate the money and get a percentage for doing so.
This is also a temporary method of raising money to become our own nonprofit within a year or two.

Advantage: We use the power a strong organization to secure community support, get venues donated for major -dance and contributions from the community, purchase items tax free and the sponsoring organization reports to the IRS.

Disadvantage: We rely on them to cut checks when we need to buy something, they get a percentage for acting as umbrella organization.

Should HHDT remain status quo?

Advantage: No extra reporting required.

Disadvantage: Unable to provide tax receipt for donations,  unable to secure use of facilities/food donations as a tax write-off as their budgets require, parents have to kick in to help pay for items, ask people in the general community to contribute without getting a tax write-off, lack of insurance for liability.

Should HHDT get a sponsor(s)?

Get a sponsor(s) to give us $2,500 to $4,000 a year to cover expenses in return for advertising their name on our shirts and any promotional materials for events.

Advantage: We would have an instant budget to work with, sponsors would have community visibility and awareness.

Disadvantage: May have to change shirts annually to accomodate new sponsor(s), name clutter on shirts , no tax write off for sponsor.
