Hello. Thanks for taking the time to answer these 7 questions.

Please only fill in this survey if you've ever taken a paid-for classroom language course.

(The survey is part of my Masters research project into motivation in language learning.)

When learning a language, have you ever felt annoyed with yourself for not having the will power to study or practise the language more often?

Yes, often

Sometimes

No, never

What do you think are the biggest advantages of attending a classroom language course? (As opposed to studying at home) Order the advantages 1 to 5, with 1 being the biggest advantage.
It’s sociable
It’s a way to set aside time to study the language every week
Being with other learners boosts your motivation
Paying money for the course motivates you to stick with it
You can ask questions to the teacher if you don’t understand

What do you think are the biggest disadvantages of a classroom course? (As opposed to studying at home) Order the disadvantages 1 to 5, with 1 being the biggest disadvantage.
Making the journey to the class is a lot of effort (eg. if you’re tired or the weather’s bad)
Course fees can be expensive
The pace of learning might be too slow or too fast for you
The teacher may be no good
There is no flexibility if you're busy or running late

Imagine you had paid £100 for a ten-week classroom course. In the first 5 weeks of the course you only go to 2 classes. Say how much each of the following thoughts would bother you.
This would bother me a lot This might bother me a bit This wouldn’t bother me at all
You would have missed out on learning and might fall behind the rest of the class.
You would have wasted £30 paying for classes you didn’t attend.
The teacher and other students might think you’re not committed to learning.

If you paid £100 for a ten-week classroom course, how many of the classes would you comfortably miss without feeling guilty or annoyed with yourself?

I wouldn’t feel comfortable missing any classes

I would comfortably miss 1 – 2 classes

I would comfortably miss 3 – 5 classes

I would comfortably miss 6 – 8 classes

I would comfortably miss 9 – 10 classes

If you paid £300, for a ten-week classroom course, how many of the classes would you comfortably miss without feeling guilty or annoyed with yourself?

I wouldn’t feel comfortable missing any classes

I would comfortably miss 1 – 2 classes

I would comfortably miss 3 – 5 classes

I would comfortably miss 6 – 8 classes

I would comfortably miss 9 – 10 classes

Imagine a system where you pay £100 for a ten-week classroom course. Every class you turn up for, the teacher gives you back £10. For example, if you go to all classes you make back £100 and the course costs you nothing.

How much do you think this system would motivate you to attend classes?

It would motivate me a lot. I’d be much less likely to miss classes.

It would be good extra motivation but I may still miss a few classes.

It would make no difference. Earning back the money wouldn’t be any incentive.
