Welcome to the KPMG organisation survey for the revalidation of nurses and midwives.
Thank you for taking part in this. It forms an important part of the work KPMG has been commissioned to undertake for the NMC, in assessing the impact of revalidation on the health and care system.
The survey deadline is Thursday 04 June 2015.
Confidentiality
Please be assured that all information provided will be treated in the strictest of confidence. The responses that KPMG receive will be used to form a view of the impact and costs and benefits across groups of similar organisations. KPMG will not specifically identify or attribute responses to individual organisations.
How to complete this survey
In summary, the survey has been split into three areas:
1) Background information - To obtain a better picture of your organisation, the number of nurses and midwives you employ, and setting in which you operate.
2) Specific changes in requirements - To determine the impact that the specific changes of revalidation will bring to existing requirements. In this section we ask what changes you are making within your organisation, for estimated costs and for financial information. This will allow us to understand in more detail the new model of revalidation, the incremental changes it brings and the financial costs involved.
3) Key themes - To provide information on overall changes you expect as a result of the implementation of revalidation.
The survey questions have been provided in a PDF document to allow you to review this in advance. We hope that this will assist you in completion
Please note that in order to complete the survey you may need to source data from other individuals within your organisation to allow you to answer the questions as well as you reasonably can. Therefore, we recommend that you review the survey in full in advance and plan any additional input that may be required to allow you sufficient time to include this ahead of the survey deadline.
The survey will allow you to save your progress and complete it in stages. This will allow you to return and complete any missing aspects at a later time.
Please also note that some of the questions in this survey will ask you for data and figures. We understand that you will not always have exact numbers or evidenced data. However, it is extremely valuable to KPMG's analysis to have answers to as many of the questions as possible. Therefore, in these circumstances, please provide your best estimate.
Finally, there are some questions that will ask for levels of awareness. Where these questions are asked, please use the following descriptions:
Description of levels of awareness
• High awareness - A high level of understanding and awareness of the proposed changes to current requirements and how it will impact registered nurses and midwives in the organisation
• Medium awareness - Some understanding and awareness of the proposed changes to current requirements and how it will impact registered nurses and midwives in the organisation
• Low awareness - Very little understanding and awareness of the proposed changes to current requirements and how this might impact upon registered nurses and midwives in their organisation
• No awareness - No awareness of revalidation
If you need any help completing this survey, please contact the KPMG team at [email protected].

Continuing professional development (CPD) requirements |
| |
|
|
|
Under the new revalidation requirements, registered nurses and midwives will need to undertake a minimum of 40 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to their scope of practice. Of these 40 hours, at least 20 hours must be participatory learning. Participatory learning is any activity where the registrant interacts with other people.
They will also need to provide a record of their CPD if they are requested to provide further information.
The main changes in the requirements are outlined below. We would like to understand and assess what the impact might be on your organisations specifically as a result of these CPD changes.
Changes associated with revalidation • Registered nurses and midwives must undertake 5 extra hours of CPD over 3 years (40 hours in total) • Of the 40 hours of CPD, registered nurses and midwives must now undertake at least 20 hours of participatory learning over 3 years • Registered nurses and midwives are required to maintain a CPD record in their portfolio, including recording how their CPD is relevant to the Code |

Practice hour requirements |
| |
|
|
|
Under the new revalidation requirements, registered nurses and midwives will need to undertake a minimum of 450 practice hours over the three year prior to revalidation if they are a nurse or a midwife, or a minimum of 900 hours if they are both a nurse and a midwife.
Registered nurses and midwives will also need to provide information on their practice hours when completing the online application, or for the purposes of providing further information to the NMC if requested.
The NMC recommends that registered nurses and midwives collect the following details about their practice: · Dates of practice · The number of hours undertaken · Name, address and postcode of the organisations · Scope of practice · Work setting · A description of the work undertaken · Evidence of those practice hours, such as timesheets, job specifications and role profiles
The changes to the practice hour requirements are set out below. We would like to understand and assess what the impact might be on your organisation specifically as a result of these.
Changes associated with revalidation •The NMC recommends that registered nurses and midwives maintain a record of practice hours in a portfolio including: dates of practice; number of hours undertaken; details of organisations; scope of practice; work setting; description of work undertaken; and evidence of practice hours • Reduction in the practice hours for registered midwives who are Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (SCPHN) from 900 hours to 450 hours • Registered midwives who are practicing only as SCPHNs do not need to submit an Intention to Practice notification; however, if they choose to return to midwifery practice they must successfully complete a return to practice programme |

Feedback, reflection and professional development discussion (PDD) requirements |
| |
|
|
|
Under new revalidation requirements registered nurses and midwives will need to obtain a minimum of five pieces of practice-related feedback in the three year period prior to revalidation. This could include feedback from patients, service users, carers, students or colleagues. They will also need to record a minimum of five written reflections on the Code, CPD activities, and/or practice-related feedback in the three-year period prior to revalidation and will need to have a professional development discussion with another NMC registrant (either their confirmer or a peer). The NMC confirmer or peer will need to sign a form to confirm the discussion has taken place.
The changes are set out below. We would like to understand and assess what the impact might be on your organisation specifically as a result of these changes.
Changes associated with revalidation • Registered nurses and midwives must obtain at least 5 pieces of practice-related feedback over the 3 years prior to the renewal of their registration. • Registered nurses and midwives must record a minimum of 5 written reflections over the 3 years prior to the renewal of their registration • Registered nurses and midwives must have a professional development discussion with another NMC registrant |

Third party confirmation requirements |
| |
|
|
|
Under the new revalidation requirements, in order to revalidate registered nurses and midwives will need to obtain signed confirmation from an appropriate third party to confirm compliance with the revalidation requirements. An appropriate confirmer would be a line manager. Where this is not possible, confirmation can be obtained from another NMC registered nurse or midwife the registrant works with. If that is not possible, confirmation can be obtained from another healthcare professional they work with who is regulated in the UK.
The changes are set out below. We would like to understand and assess what the impact might be on your organisations specifically as a result of these changes.
Changes associated with revalidation • Declaration that the registered nurse or midwife has demonstrated to an appropriate third party that they have complied with the revalidation requirements • Confirmation must take place via a face-to-face conversation or video conference • Registered nurses and midwives must provide the name, NMC PIN or other professional identification number (where relevant), email, professional address and postcode of the third party confirmer |

The changes for nurses and midwives are set out below. We would like to understand and assess what the impact might be on your organisations specifically as a result of these changes.
Changes associated with revalidation • Registered nurses and midwives must register with NMC online and submit their revalidation form for maintaining their ongoing registration online • The NMC may request further information to verify / support the declarations made by registered nurses and midwives as part of the revalidation process. This will be submitted through the online portal (NMC online) |
