Consider the following three basic models of University Technology Transfer:

UNIVERSITY-OWNERSHIP TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER MODEL (current model):

A) University owns research outcomes, discoveries, and inventions made by faculty and graduate students.
B) Ownership rights automatically vest in the university.
C) All disclosures are made to the university technology transfer office.
D) Assignment of ownership rights in discoveries and inventions to the university is required.

SHARED-OWNERSHIP TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER MODEL:

A) University owns research outcomes, discoveries, and inventions made by faculty and graduate students IF the technology transfer office elects to commercialize them. A time-limit is placed on University's opportunity to elect to commercialize (e.g. 90 days). If the university does not elect to commercialize, ownership rights vest in the creator/inventor.
B) Ownership rights automatically vest in the creator/inventor and may be assigned to the university at a later date.
C) Discoveries are initially disclosed to the University. Creator/Inventor-owned inventions may be managed by the university OR may be transferred via outside management channels.
D) Assignment of ownership rights in discoveries and inventions to the university is voluntary.

INVENTOR-OWNERSHIP TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER MODEL:

A) Creators/Inventors own their research outcomes, discoveries, and inventions.
B) Ownership rights automatically vest in the creator/inventor and may be assigned at a later date.
C) Discoveries may be disclosed to the university OR may be transferred via outside management channels.
D) Assignments of ownership rights in discoveries and inventions to the university is voluntary.
