CASE

There are four companies A, B, C and D that sell the same product and they all consider to expand their current businesses through partnering with external companies e.g. with Asian companies. These four companies are located at the same business environment. Currently, they are producing their products in their own company conform the EU rule of conduct. Partnership with external party can have several positive and negative impacts on these companies. However this depends on their current strategy. In order to establish this partnership, each of the four company acts from their own strategy. Furthermore the Asian companies score very poor status on human rights, environmental issues and other social responsibilities. However they score high on low cost manufacturing. Therefore, partnership with these Asian companies will offer lower price products, fast delivery and customized products, but it also impacts the reputation of the company due to their ignorance of societal and environmental responsibilities.

The actions of these four companies are described below.

Company A

The core focus is Company A is on the maximization of profit for the shareholders. Consumers and other stakeholders have little or no influence on their decisions. The partnership with external Asian party is interesting, as long as it maximizes profit for the shareholders, even when it can harm or damage the societal environment. Profit and the quality of the products are valued higher than the societal responsibilities. The managers of Company A will agree a partnership with the Asian companies, because they will be able to sell the products at lower price and the quality of the product will remain the same.

Company B

This company perceives themselves as one of the members of the society. The decisions and actions are not only taken rationally, but also emotionally, this because of their main concern for the community. Partnering is possible when it contributes value to the community. If the community is against the child labor or other societal responsibilities, partnering with those parties will be just ruled out. They only cooperate with external partners when the philanthropy is rated very high The managers of Company B will form no partnership with the Asian companies, because of their ignorance to the societal responsibilities They will remain selling the product at the old price and quality.

Company C

The main goal of this company is on mutual benefits; the community and the company itself. This company has two-fold purpose such as fulfilling the societal expectations and creating economic value for the company. Partnering with external party is possible, only when there is balance between the profit and societal responsibilities. Thus partnering with the Asian company is not possible, because one of the mutual benefits is lacking Company C is also remaining selling their current products at the old price and quality.

Company D

The main focus of this company is on three responsibilities: transparency, sustainability and accountability. Important vehicles of this company are the broad governance approach and the degree of openness and proactivity of dialogue with stakeholders. Partnering with above partner: First option: Partnership can be possible with the external party only when they are willing to enter into a dialogue to solve their societal issues. Thereafter a partnership can be established: Price will get higher and the quality remain the same Second option: There will be no partnership with the external party, as the Asian company is not willing to change their current situation: Same price and same quality
