The purpose of a self evaluation is professional self reflection and growth.  The most successful employees use the self evaluation process as an honest opportunity to reflect on how they might have been a better team member or contributor.  Employees with excellent self reflection skills usually end up being excellent contributors.  The idea is to see if your understanding of yourself and your contributions matches what others perceive.  No one gets awarded higher compensation or benefit because they evaluated themselves highly on everything; rather that reflects poor self awareness.
