Facts about The Big Issue

Below are some facts about The Big Issue. Please take a moment to read through the information before moving onto the next set of questions.

The Big Issue is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that develops solutions to help homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged people positively change their lives.

The Big Issue provides opportunities for people from a range of backgrounds, including those with mental illness, homelessness, long-term unemployment, intellectual and physical disability, drug and alcohol dependency and social isolation, with the opportunity to earn an income and build their confidence and capacity to help themselves. This is done through the following social enterprises and programs:

The Big Issue Magazine
  • A fortnightly, independent magazine sold on the streets by homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged people.
  • Vendors buy copies of the magazine for $3 and sell them for $6, keeping the difference.
  • Estimated to save the community $20,000 per vendor per year through a reduction in demand for social services like hospitals, welfare and correctional facilities.
  • 8 million magazines have been sold across Australia, putting $16.2 million into the pockets of vendors since 1996.

The Community Street Soccer Program
  • Uses soccer to help people positively change their lives and reconnect with the community.
  • Weekly training sessions at 18 sites, giving participants an opportunity to get active and make new friends in a fun and non-threatening environment.

The Women’s Subscription Enterprise
  • Provides job opportunities for homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged women through the sale of subscriptions to The Big Issue Magazine.
  • These women pack the magazines for distribution to subscribers every fortnight, giving them an income as well as access to training, mentoring and support.

The Big Issue Classroom
  • Held at The Big Issue offices, the classroom provides school, tertiary and corporate groups with a ‘real-life’ insight into homelessness, marginalisation and disadvantage.
  • Participants hear first-hand from people who have experienced homelessness, helping to break down stereotypes surrounding disadvantage in the community.
  • Almost 30,000 students have taken part The Big Issue Classroom since its launch in 2009.
