Hello:

This summer as part of the ACPS Summer PD options all teachers will be required to take at least one course from the group of courses that the district is referring to as the Digital Curriculum Strand." You can find a listing of the available course at this link: http://www2.k12albemarle.org/dept/instruction/arc/PD/pd2014/Pages/default.aspx

This survey invites Stone-Robinson teachers to think about and describe their current practice as it relates to technology use. I believe that this will provide us with a nice starting point for future work and some context to help you decide which courses you will be interested in taking this summer. Prior to completing the survey, teachers should read one of the articles listed below both of which describe the so called "four step process of technology adoption".

Evaluating Technology Use in the Classroom

Shaping Tech for the Classroom

Please make sure you have read either of the articles before coming to the faculty meeting on Thursday May 8, 2014 as we will provide about 15 minutes for teachers to complete this survey for the first time then. Both articles are very short and can be read in less than 10 minutes.

The Edutopia article that you were asked to read suggests that "When a new technology appears, our first instinct is always to continue doing things within the technology the way we've always done it." The authors call this practice "doing old things in old ways". Which of the following best describes your technology use as it relates to doing old things in old ways?

In the articles, one of the authors provided some examples of what they refer to as doing old things in new ways. For instance, the article cited teachers having students "watching Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech or listening to a recording of Stalin. Old things in new ways could also be reading and evaluation an original piece of writing or visiting a battle site via Google Earth."
The author went on to say that "These are not new things…just new ways of doing old things." Which of the following best describes your technology use as it relates to doing new things in old ways?

As a frame for thinking about doing new things in new ways, one author asks the following three questions about the work we ask our students to do with technology?

*Does the technology allow students to learn from people they never would have been
able to without it?
*Does the technology allow students to interact with information in a way that is
meaningful and could not have happened otherwise?
*Does the technology allow students to create and share their knowledge with an
audience they never would have had access to without technology?

Which of the following best describes your technology use as it relates to doing new things in new ways?
