Sterilizer Attendant/Cagewash Attendant: Maintain sanitary animal rooms. Clean, beds, packages and sterilize cages. Dispose of soiled animal bedding appropriately. May receive animal shipments from outside vendors. Maintain records of cagewash effectiveness (heat tapes) and maintenance, sterilizer efficacy (heat tape and biological indicators) and maintenance. High school diploma or GED equivalent is required .
Animal Caregiver: Dispense adequate and appropriate animal husbandry to research animals on a daily basis. Ensure animals have sufficient food and water and that cages are cleaned on a routine basis. Examine animals daily for illness or injury. Clean and sanitize all surfaces in animal rooms. Keep animal cage labeling up to date. Maintain animal room records including daily temperature and humidity check, light timer check, use environmental surface bacterial sampling to monitor effectiveness of sanitation practices. May transport soiled cages to cagewash area. Administer treatments to ill animals. Maintain records of ill and deceased animals. High school diploma or equivalent is required; certification by AALAS at the ALAT level is preferred.
Veterinary Technician: Ensure operating rooms are sanitized and stocked with necessary surgical supplies. Provide veterinary technical assistance by performing anesthetic induction and surgical preparation of various species. Train staff in biomethodology techniques. Purchase supplies and ensure lab is clean. Maintain all required records in accordance with federal regulations. Licensed veterinary technician with an Associate of Science degree from an accredited school is required with extensive laboratory and research animal veterinary technical experience. Minimum of two years’ experience performing anesthesia, surgical assistance and biomethodology on a variety of animal species including swine, dogs, cats, sheep, rabbits, rodents and nonhuman primates is needed.
Vivarium Supervisor: Oversee animal husbandry performed in compliance with federal regulations as set forth in the Animal Welfare Act, NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Assign work, train and supervise animal care staff. Perform animal husbandry and cage washing services as needed. Monitor health of animals and administer medications. Ensure all HEPA filtered equipment is certified annually. Responsible for posting signage on all hazardous experiments (biological, radioactive, chemical). Train all new animal caregivers in appropriate practices. Schedule employees to ensure weekend and holiday coverage. Oversee rodent animal health surveillance program and coordinate submission of samples with diagnostic lab. High School diploma or GED equivalent with certification by AALAS minimally at the LAT level; Bachelor’s degree and AALAS certification at the LATG level in addition to minimum 5 years’ related experience is preferred.
Head Veterinary Technician: Assist the Veterinarian, principal investigator and/or research technical staff with techniques of animal restraint, handling, preparation of surgical candidates, anesthesia, incubation and catheterrization. Administer anesthesia and maintain patient records. Maintain surgical support facilities in a clean, well-stocked and orderly manner. Schedule operating room use and ensure that equipment preventative maintenance is performed. Provide training. Maintain all controlled substance records. Perform physical exams of sick animals and administer initial treatment after consultation with veterinarian(s). Schedule and perform routine testing and vaccinations. Licensed veterinary technician with Associate of Science or Baccalaureate degree with extensive animal handling, veterinary experience and medical technical skills with animals is needed.
Assistant Department Supervisor: Assist supervisor with staff scheduling. Contact investigators with health concerns regarding lab animals. Report HVAC or utility problems. Act as department supervisor in supervisor’s absence; train and supervise new staff. Ensure cages are clean and sanitary, animals are well fed, and properly dispose of soiled bedding; hazardous materials are contained and disposed of properly. Inspect animals upon arrival from vendors and administer drug treatments. Track inventory and order supplies. Ensure transportation of animals is in compliance with guidelines. High School diploma or GED equivalent, some related experience with ability to supervise others; AALAS certification at LAT level desired
