Context:
Imagine flight maneuver which replace standard step-climb procedure by Continuous Climbing Cruise as depicted on figure. The slow vertical transition (about 10-30ft/min) can last several hours and during the transition several thousand feet can be climbed up.
Two versions of avionics implementations are envisioned:
Advisory CCC: Pilot is guided to follow the profile by EFB. Other avionics is not changed. Airspace between origin and final flight level is reserved.
Advanced CCC: Pilot can select CCC procedure in FMS/Guidance panel as a new control mode of aircraft. Some vertical corridor (+/-300ft) along vertical profile is reserved.
Questions for pilots.
On each question please answer from both perspectives: Advisory CCC and Advanced CCC solution.
Discomfort:

1.Do you see the possibility the CCC maneuver can create a passenger’s discomfort? If so, please describe details.

Example of answer: CCC with rate 10-20 ft/min can’t have impact for passengers.

2.Do you see the possibility the CCC maneuver can create a flight crew’s discomfort? If so, please describe details.

Example of answer: Small divergence from artificial horizon can be disturbing.

3.Can you assess if such procedure can increase your workload? If so, please describe details.

Example of answer: Periodic monitoring vertical rate during cruise is an additional workload.

Benefits:

4.What benefits the CCC can bring for a flight crew? If so, please describe details.

Example of answer: one CCC maneuver instead of many steps can reduce workload.

5.What benefits the CCC can bring for an aircraft operator (i.e. airline, company)? If so, please describe details.

Example of answer: CCC maneuver can bring fuel savings.

6.What benefits the CCC can bring for a passenger? If so, please describe details.

Example of answer: Step-climbs are noticeable by passenger, CCC will probably not.

Feasibility:

7.Can we assume that some climbing rate would not be possible? Please describe details.

Example of answer: Climb rates under 50ft/min are not possible to select on Guidance panel.

8.Which granularity in climbing rate / angle of attack change would require pilot check? Please describe details.

Example of answer: This might reduce the opportunities and thus the benefits.

9.On what routes would you think CCC is particularly beneficial? Please describe details.

Example of answer: Santa Maria airspace is significantly less congested.

10.On what routes, would it bring no benefit according to you? Please describe details.

Example of answer: North Atlantic airspace is very congested.

11.Do you think CCC (long, slow climb between 1000ft flight levels apart) can also be executed into continental air space in Europe or North America?

If so, where and what assumptions are the most important for the application of CCC in continental air space?

Example of answer: Only on night flights.

If so, at what FL should CCC be possible in Europe ?

Example of answer: above FL390.

Performance:

12.Can you imagine situation (e.g. traffic situation, weather conditions) when CCC generates significant fuel savings in comparison with step climbs? Please describe details.

Example of answer: Step-climb nearby Maximum altitude is often not possible, if weight is not entered correctly. Slow continuous rate can produce savings even in these cases.

13.Can you imagine situation (e.g. traffic situation, weather conditions) when CCC procedure generates higher fuel consumption than step climbs? Please describe details.

Example of answer: During significant turbulence. Not keeping slow vertical rate can divert aircraft from fuel optimal trajectory significantly.

Safety:

14.Do you see any safety issue with the performance of such maneuver?

Example of answer: Non-level flight is harder to safely follow.

15.Can you imagine situation (e.g. traffic situation, weather conditions) when CCC procedure generates safety decreasing? Please describe details.

Example of answer: During oceanic vertical transition the exact altitude of aircraft is not known for ATC.

16.Would you expect special training for CCC procedure? Could you estimate necessary scope and time.

Example of answer: Slow vertical transition on cruise requires additional monitoring which pilot should be trained for.

17.Can you assess the impact of CCC procedure on other procedures? Please describe details.

Example of answer: Principles of vertical separations are affected.
