Project Description

Content of Stereotypes about people with HIV

Project Abstract

This study explores the content of stereotypes held regarding people with HIV in South Africa. Research on reactions to people with HIV shows that negative attitudes towards and stigmatisation of people with HIV is linked to an increased denial of its presence within one's community which can lead to lower rates of HIV precautionary behaviour (abstinence, safer sex) and can consequently escalate the HIV rates within any community. The participants of this exploratory study are second-year students from the University of Johannesburg in South Africa.
