Project Description

Cultural differences in user perception on mobile phone icon design

Project Abstract

This study attempts to explore whether or not significant variations exist in the iconic vocabulary of mobile phone users with different cultural backgrounds, specifically American and Korean cultures. These variations matter because they provide insight into the role that different interpretive communities play in transmitting and reproducing cultural distinctions, and because designers will benefit from the ability to alter and enhance their design with the data gained from researching the perceptual differences between these two cultures in depth in order to reduce the overall noise and to help foster the chance for cross-cultural mobile communities. Based on an extensive research, this study will also suggest design guidelines to designers or developers to design appropriate interface icons in order to accommodate cultural difference.
