Mobile Survey Design: Benefits & Best Practices

Mobile technology has quickly moved to the forefront of how we communicate and conduct business. As of November 2016, 77% of Americans now own a smartphone; that’s more than double the 35% from 2011. Businesses are well aware of this shift, with an emphasis being put on “mobile-optimized” everything – from ads to emails to shopping for groceries. Mobile surveys are ideal for optimization; a strong mobile survey design will ensure that you get the insights that you need, when you need them.

The #1 benefit of mobile surveys is that they are more convenient. Mobile surveys adapt to users’ environments and are accessible at their convenience. In other words, they emphasize to your user that you understand that their time is valuable. But there are other benefits of mobile survey design that are just as important to your users.

  • Efficiency: A well thought out mobile survey design makes the task quick and painless for the user. This will also make them more likely to complete your survey.

Best Practices for Mobile Survey Design

  1. Keep your questions focused. Having short and to the point questions makes users more likely to complete your survey.
  2. Create a clean experience for your users. Be wary of adding too many distractions in your survey like unnecessary images or logos. Not only do these distract from your survey, they could cause slower load times, in turn frustrating users.
  3. Drive efficiency for your users by using logic so that they are only seeing questions significant to them. Making users scroll through questions that aren’t relevant to them is tedious.
  4. Use pre-entered text whenever possible. Too many open-ended answers can be tiresome to enter on a mobile device, which could increase your dropout rate.
  5. Choose question types that work best on a small screen like star-ratings or drop-downs. This will engage your users making them more likely to respond to future surveys.
