What is FERPA?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. It applies to all the schools that receive funds from the U.S. Department of Education.

The law ensures that the parents and students have the right to review the educational information and records and seek to have them amended. With FERPA, they also get control over the disclosure of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) from the records.

QuestionPro makes sure that unauthorized persons cannot access any student information considered confidential under FERPA.

Why does it matter for your research?

Find out if your research project involves the use of PII or protected educational records. If so, ensure compliance with the FERPA.

Check whether you are using student data that includes any basic demographic, background information, or educational data.

For instance, if you ask questions about the student's gender, GPA, etc., this data is not regulated by FERPA as it was given by the student and not derived from official educational records.

For more details, refer QuestionPro: FERPA compliant survey software.
