THE PROBLEM
We ran our annual engagement survey. Scores dipped on ‘Manager Communication.’ Now what?
If you’ve sat in that meeting — staring at a low score with no clear idea on what is driving it — you already understand the gap that Conversations is designed to close.
Traditional surveys are powerful. But depending on what you are looking to accomplish, they can be slow. By the time results are in, analysed, and presented, in the fast moving world, sometimes it can feel like eternity. The team has moved on. The concern has grown.
Continuous listening is no longer a nice-to-have for most HR teams. It’s becoming the standard. But that raises a real question: how do you get fast, honest, actionable input from employees without the overhead of running a full survey every time something comes up?
That’s exactly what Conversations is built for.
What is “Conversations”?
Conversations is a lightweight, real-time employee listening functionality inside QuestionPro’s employee listening platform. It lets HR leaders and managers pose a single focused question to their workforce and collect anonymous responses — instantly.
Employees respond, react to each other’s answers, and add comments. Admins see it all come in live — with AI-generated analysis running automatically in the background.
No survey builder. No distribution setup. No waiting for the report. Just a question, honest answers, and immediate insight.
Why It Works: The Three Things Employees Actually Need
1. Anonymity that’s real, not symbolic
Every response in Conversations is anonymous. Employees are assigned a randomised avatar and name — consistent throughout the conversation, but completely disconnected from their identity. Even the admin who created the conversation cannot trace a response back to a person.
This isn’t a checkbox on a privacy policy. It’s built into the architecture. And it makes a measurable difference in what employees are willing to say.
Employees can see each other’s responses, react with likes or dislikes, and add comments — all anonymously. This turns a one-way data collection exercise into something that feels more like a real conversation.
When employees see their own thoughts reflected in others’ responses, engagement goes up. When they feel like they’re part of a dialogue rather than filling in a form, response quality improves.
3. Speed that matches the pace of work
Once a Conversation is created, distribution is as simple as copying a URL and pasting it into an email, a Slack channel, or a Teams message. Responses start coming in immediately. Analysis starts the moment you have five or more responses.
There is no waiting period. No manual export. No analyst bottleneck. The insight is available as fast as employees respond.
How AI Analysis Augments the Insights
Once responses start coming in, QuestionPro’s AI engine analyzes them in real time. Here’s what gets generated automatically:
Response Summary
An executive-level narrative that synthesises the key themes across all responses. Written for a decision-maker, not a data analyst. Ready to paste into a leadership update.
Sentiment Detection
Responses are automatically categorised as Negative, Neutral, or Positive. The distribution updates in real time as new responses arrive. You can see at a glance whether the mood is trending in a direction that needs attention.
Trending Topics
The AI identifies the top recurring themes across all responses and surfaces them as distinct, labelled topics. Each topic comes with an action recommendation — a clear, executive-level suggestion for what to do next based on what employees said.
Taken together, these three outputs mean that by the time you close your laptop after launching a Conversation, you may already have enough to walk into your next leadership meeting with a clear point of view.
When to Use It
Conversations is purpose-built for focused, time-sensitive listening. These are the scenarios where it delivers the most value:
- An annual or pulse survey flagged a low score on a specific topic and you need to understand why before your next all-hands
- An unexpected event — a reorg, a policy change, a difficult quarter — and leadership wants to take a quick check on how employees are feeling
- A strategic change was just rolled out and you want to know how it landed before the next town hall
- A specific team or department is showing signs of disengagement and you need targeted, anonymous input to understand the root cause
- You want to validate a proposed initiative before committing resources to it
When Not to Use It
Conversations is designed around a single focused question. If you need to gather robust data across multiple topics simultaneously, a full survey is the right tool. Similarly, if the subject matter is highly sensitive in a way that could generate responses inappropriate for other employees to see before moderation, the open social format may not be the best fit.
Who It’s For
Conversations is most valuable for HR professionals who already run employee surveys and are looking for a faster, more dynamic way to complement that data. Specifically:
- HR Managers and Directors who need quick answers on emerging issues between survey cycles
- CHROs and VPs of People who want to demonstrate responsiveness to employee concerns in real time
- HR Consultants who use survey data as part of their engagement strategy and need a tool for rapid follow-up on high-interest findings
If your organisation already has a culture of listening through surveys, Conversations adds the speed layer that traditional surveys can’t provide.
How to Get Started
Conversations is included with the QuestionPro Employee Experience licence in — there’s no additional cost and no separate setup required.
To launch your first Conversation:
- Open Employee Experience and navigate to the Empower section
- Select Conversations from the left navigation
- Click New Conversation and add your question, title, and description
- Choose whether to enable comments, likes, and dislikes
- Copy the URL and share it wherever your employees are — email, Slack, Teams, or anywhere else
That’s it. Responses and analysis start flowing as soon as employees engage.
Final Thoughts
The gap between asking employees a question and having leadership-ready insight has historically been measured in weeks. Conversations compresses that to hours — sometimes minutes.
But the more important shift isn’t about speed. It’s about what becomes possible when employees believe their anonymous input is genuinely heard and acted on quickly. Engagement isn’t just a metric — it’s a behaviour. And behaviours change when people see that speaking up leads to something real.
Conversations gives HR teams the infrastructure to close that loop. Fast questions, honest answers, instant analysis, and clear next steps. All in one place, all included in the licence you already have.
If your last survey left you with more questions than answers on any single topic, you now have a better way to get those answers before your next one.
