Live Quizzes vs Live Polls: Which Should You Use?

A live poll and a live quiz may look similar to the participant: a question appears, they choose an answer, and a result follows. The difference is the purpose.

A live poll asks what the audience thinks. A live quiz tests what the audience knows.

Live quizzes vs. live polls at a glance

Live poll Live quiz
Measures opinion, preference, confidence or sentiment Measures knowledge using correct answers
No correct answer is required Correct-answer logic is required
Usually shows vote distribution Often shows scoring, accuracy and leaderboard results
Best for discussion and decisions Best for learning checks and competition
Example: Which topic should we cover next? Example: Which of these statements is correct?

QuestionPro LivePolls’ current unified editor makes this distinction explicit. Multiple-choice interactive questions are unscored and designed for feedback; Select Answer quiz questions use correct-answer logic, points and leaderboards. See the poll vs. quiz comparison.

When should you use a live poll?

Use a poll when there is no objectively correct response.

  • Which priority should come first?
  • How confident are you applying this?
  • Which example should we spend more time on?
  • How clear is the proposed next step?
  • What is the biggest barrier right now?

When should you use a live quiz?

Use a quiz when you want to test knowledge or reinforce a correct answer.

  • Which step comes next in the process?
  • Which statement is true?
  • What does this acronym mean?
  • Which action complies with the policy?
  • What is the correct result of this calculation?

Not sure whether your next interaction should be a poll or quiz? You can mix both in one LivePoll.

Build your session

The strongest sessions often use both

A poll tells you how the audience perceives its own understanding. A quiz tells you what people can demonstrate.

For example:

  1. Ask: “How confident are you applying this process?” as a rating poll.
  2. Follow with one scored scenario question.
  3. Compare confidence with accuracy.
  4. Spend more time where confidence and performance do not match.

That combination is more informative than either question alone.

What happens to scoring when you mix polls and quizzes?

In QuestionPro LivePolls, the unified editor keeps poll and quiz behavior separate. Feedback questions can display live charts, while scored quiz questions contribute to points and leaderboard calculations. The current documentation states that mixed sessions preserve scoring integrity by calculating leaderboard points from designated quiz questions. See the unified editor details.

Quiz leaderboards and team competition

Scored questions can make a session more energetic, but competition should serve the learning goal. QuestionPro LivePolls supports individual leaderboards for scored quiz questions and a Teams Mode for supported scored question types. Team leaderboards update based on accuracy and response progress. Read about Teams Mode and leaderboards.

When not to gamify

A leaderboard is useful for trivia, training review and low-stakes learning. It may be a poor fit for sensitive compliance topics, executive discussions, psychological safety conversations or situations where participants are already anxious about performance.

How to choose the right format

If you need to know… Use
What people prefer Poll
What people believe Poll
How confident people feel Rating poll
What questions people have Live Q&A / Live Feed
What people remember Quiz
Whether people can identify the correct action Quiz
What the group wants to discuss next Poll

Frequently asked questions

Can a live poll have multiple correct answers?

If the question has objectively correct options and you want scoring, treat it as a quiz question. In LivePolls, Select Answer can support multiple selection with designated correct answers.

Can I use polls during a quiz?

Yes. The current LivePolls unified editor is designed to mix feedback and scored questions in a single session.

Do polls count toward the leaderboard?

Unscored poll questions do not contribute quiz points. Leaderboards are based on designated scored quiz questions.

Ask the question that matches the decision

If you need an opinion, do not force a correct answer. If you need evidence of learning, do not rely only on confidence. Choose the question type based on what you need to know, not which interaction looks more entertaining.
