Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM): What It Is and Why CX Depends On It

An original equipment manufacturer (OEM) is any company in charge of producing the necessary components for other companies. Learn more.

An original equipment manufacturer (OEM) is a company that produces components used by another brand to build its own finished product, most commonly in the automotive and electronics industries. Toyota, for example, does not manufacture its own tires. It sources them from Bridgestone Americas, an OEM, and assembles them into the finished vehicle.

This relationship shapes far more than a parts list. It determines cost structure, component quality, and ultimately how satisfied a customer is with the finished car years after purchase. Dealerships, service providers, and consumers all feel the downstream effect of OEM decisions, even when they never interact with the OEM directly.

This guide covers what an OEM is, how it differs from an aftermarket manufacturer, and why OEM quality has become a customer experience issue, not just a manufacturing one.

What is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM)?

An OEM is any company responsible for producing the components that another brand assembles into a finished product sold under its own name.

These components are usually specialized parts, such as brakes, tires, or electronic control units, that come together to form a more complex finished good. The brand selling the final product, sometimes called the original brand manufacturer, sets the specifications and quality standards the OEM must meet.

This model shows up most heavily in the automotive and computer industries, where building every component in-house would be far more expensive than sourcing it from a specialist.

How is an OEM different from an aftermarket manufacturer?

An OEM produces parts under contract and to the exact specifications of the brand that will sell the finished product. An aftermarket manufacturer produces similar parts independently, without that direct relationship or those guarantees.

Factor OEM part Aftermarket part
Quality standard Set and validated by the buying brand Set independently by the maker
Warranty coverage Backed by the original brand Usually none, and can void the original warranty
Price Higher Lower
Common label “Original part” “Generic” or “non-original”

The clearest advantage of aftermarket parts is price, which makes them a reasonable option when budget is the top priority. The clearest advantage of OEM parts is a documented quality chain, backed by the brand that stands behind the finished product.

Why do companies work with OEMs instead of building everything in-house?

Companies work with OEMs mainly to reduce cost, gain specialized quality, and stay focused on what they do best.

  • Cost reduction.
Building a dedicated plant for every component a product needs would be far more expensive than sourcing from a specialist already operating at scale.
  • Higher quality through specialization.
OEMs typically focus on one component category and refine it continuously, reaching a level of precision that is hard for a newer or broader manufacturer to match.
  • Access to existing know-how.
Partnering with an OEM means tapping into infrastructure, technology, and experience that would otherwise take years to build from scratch.
  • Sharper focus for both sides.
OEMs concentrate on production speed and quality, while the buying brand can focus its energy on design, marketing, and the end customer relationship.

How do OEM decisions affect automotive customer experience?

OEM component quality directly shapes how satisfied a driver is with a vehicle long after the sale, especially as cars add more software and electronic systems.

J.D. Power’s 2025 vehicle quality research found that the largest satisfaction gaps in new vehicles now come from setup, infotainment, and app-based systems, not traditional mechanical issues. That shift matters because many of these components come from OEM software and electronics suppliers, not the automaker itself.

This is especially visible in eMobility, where electric vehicles rely on a new mix of software-driven and electronic components rather than purely mechanical ones. A weak OEM component here can affect the ownership experience just as much as a mechanical part failure would have a decade ago.

How should dealerships monitor OEM-related customer experience?

Dealerships and service providers should track customer sentiment continuously across the buying journey, rather than waiting for a single post-sale survey.

A practical approach includes:

  1. Capturing feedback right after delivery, while the experience is fresh
  2. Monitoring service visits tied to specific components or systems
  3. Segmenting feedback by vehicle model and component supplier where possible
  4. Watching for recurring complaints that point to a specific OEM part rather than a one-off issue

This kind of ongoing monitoring is where a dedicated customer experience management platform, such as QuestionPro Customer Experience or QuestionPro Autox, becomes useful. These tools support real-time analysis, satisfaction and loss scoring, and regression analysis to connect specific components or experiences to overall satisfaction trends across the buyer journey.

Getting the OEM relationship right for the long term

The OEM relationship is often invisible to the end customer, but its effects are not. A driver who deals with a glitchy infotainment system or a poorly fitted part rarely blames the specific supplier. They blame the brand on the vehicle.

\That’s exactly why tracking satisfaction at the component level, not just the overall purchase experience, gives manufacturers and dealerships an early warning system before small OEM issues become brand-wide complaints.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is an OEM part the same as a genuine part?

Yes, in most contexts. “Genuine” and “OEM” both describe parts made to the original brand’s exact specifications, as opposed to aftermarket parts made independently without that direct relationship.

Can a company be both an OEM and a retail brand?

Yes. Some companies manufacture components for other brands as an OEM while also selling finished products under their own name, effectively competing with some of their own customers in certain categories.

Do OEM parts always cost more than aftermarket parts?

Usually, yes, because OEM parts carry warranty backing and stricter quality validation. The price gap varies by component and vehicle brand, so it’s worth comparing both options for non-safety-critical repairs.

Why are software and electronics becoming a bigger OEM issue in cars?

Electric and connected vehicles rely far more heavily on software, sensors, and electronic control units than older mechanical designs did, which means OEM software quality now affects daily driving satisfaction as much as hardware ever did.

How can a dealership tell if a customer complaint is OEM-related?

Segmenting service tickets and satisfaction surveys by vehicle system or component often reveals patterns, such as repeated complaints tied to one electronic system, that point to an OEM-level issue rather than an isolated defect.
