Live Q&A: How to Get Questions From an Audience That Won’t Speak Up

A silent audience does not necessarily mean an audience with no questions. It may mean people do not want to interrupt, do not want to be the first person to speak, are worried that the question is too basic, or simply need a quieter way to participate.

A live Q&A removes much of that friction. Participants can submit questions digitally while the session is happening, and the host can use audience voting to identify what the group most wants answered.

Why spoken Q&A misses important questions

The microphone rewards confidence, speed and visibility. It does not always reward relevance.

In a large meeting, class, webinar or town hall, you may hear repeatedly from a small group while dozens of other participants stay silent. A digital Q&A changes the mechanics: everyone gets the same entry point, and questions can arrive without stopping the flow of the presentation.

What is live Q&A?

Live Q&A is a real-time question channel that lets an audience submit questions or comments from their devices during a session. Depending on the tool and settings, participants may also vote on submitted questions, respond anonymously, or see which questions are most popular.

QuestionPro LivePolls’ Live Feed is an open-ended question type that gathers responses in real time. The host can review a continuous feed, see top-voted responses, and pin a response. Participants can also vote on answers they want to push higher. See the current Live Feed workflow.

A better prompt than “Any questions?”

What’s the question you’re thinking but haven’t asked yet?

This wording gives people permission to surface the question they were already holding back. Other useful prompts include:

  • What needs answering before we finish?
  • What part of this needs a clearer example?
  • What would you challenge about this approach?
  • What are we assuming that we should test?
  • What would stop you from acting on this tomorrow?

Give quieter voices a way into the conversation.

Start a live Q&A

How audience voting improves live Q&A

When 50 questions arrive, the host should not have to guess which five deserve attention. Voting turns the question list into a crowdsourced priority list.

A strong workflow is:

  1. Let participants submit questions throughout the session.
  2. Let the audience vote on the questions they also want answered.
  3. Use the highest-voted questions as the core Q&A agenda.
  4. Pin or highlight the question currently being discussed.
  5. Save unanswered themes for follow-up.

Where live Q&A works especially well

Town halls and leadership AMAs

Employees can ask questions without waiting for the microphone. Voting gives leaders a clearer signal of which concerns are broadly shared.

Webinars

Questions can arrive while the speaker is presenting. The host can save them for the end or address them when the relevant slide appears.

Classrooms

Students who are uncomfortable asking aloud have another way to flag confusion. The same question can also be upvoted by classmates.

Panels and conferences

Instead of selecting questions randomly from raised hands, moderators can work from a ranked list of audience priorities.

How to keep live Q&A useful

  • Set the expectation early. Tell participants they can submit questions from the beginning.
  • Use one clear prompt. A focused Q&A produces better questions than an empty text box.
  • Explain whether responses are anonymous. Do not let participants assume anonymity if it is not enabled.
  • Use voting. Popular questions can reveal shared uncertainty or concern.
  • Close the loop. If time runs out, explain how unanswered questions will be handled.

Live Q&A vs. open discussion

You do not have to choose. A live Q&A can help you decide which topics deserve an open discussion. The digital channel surfaces the signal; the conversation explores the reasoning behind it.

Frequently asked questions

Can live Q&A be anonymous?

Many audience-response platforms provide anonymous participation options. QuestionPro LivePolls provides respondent anonymity controls, with specific availability depending on the plan and session setup.

Can participants vote on questions in QuestionPro LivePolls?

Yes. Live Feed supports participant voting, and the host view includes top-voted responses.

Should questions appear immediately?

That depends on the audience and context. For a small internal workshop, immediate visibility can keep the conversation fluid. High-stakes public events may require a more moderated workflow.

The goal is not more questions. It is better visibility.

A live Q&A is valuable because it reveals what the audience is trying to understand, challenge or clarify. When the quiet question becomes visible, you can respond while the conversation is still happening.
