Best Course Evaluation Software: 8 Platforms Compared for 2026

Course evaluation software

The best course evaluation software gets students to respond and protects their anonymity. It also puts clear results in front of faculty while a course can still change. The tool collects student feedback on courses and instructors, usually inside the learning management system (LMS) students already use.

Platforms differ sharply. Some vendors build only for evaluations. Others sell research suites that run evaluations as one survey type. The wrong match costs response rate, staff hours, and faculty trust.

In this guide, we compare eight platforms on LMS fit, response-rate tools, reporting, and compliance, then show how to choose and pilot one.

What is course evaluation software?

Course evaluation software is a platform that schedules, delivers, and analyzes student surveys about courses and instructors at a college or university. It replaces paper forms with online surveys sent by email, text message, QR code, or an LMS such as Canvas or Blackboard.

The core job is simple. The platform collects scores and written comments, combines them by course, department, and term, and reports them to instructors and administrators. Most tools also handle five supporting tasks:

  • Pull class rosters from the student information system (SIS).
  • Send reminders.
  • Protect anonymity.
  • Control who can see which report.
  • Export data for accreditation.

How is course evaluation software different from similar tools?

Several neighboring terms get mixed up during procurement. The table separates them by what each one measures and who usually owns it.

Term What it measures Usual owner
Course evaluation software Student feedback on one course and its instructor Institutional research or provost’s office
Student satisfaction survey The wider campus experience, such as advising and services Student affairs
Mid-semester feedback A short check while the course is still running Individual instructors
Faculty evaluation system Full teaching review, including peer observation and portfolios Deans and provost
LMS built-in survey Basic polls and quizzes inside one course Individual instructors
General survey tool Any survey type, usually without roster feeds Any team

Course evaluation results often feed a faculty evaluation system. They are one input, not the whole review.

How do you choose course evaluation software?

Start with delivery, not dashboards. Strong analytics help only when students respond, so test how the survey reaches them first. Seven checks separate a good fit from a costly mistake.

  • LMS and SIS fit: Confirm the survey embeds in your LMS and that rosters sync from your SIS without manual uploads. Ask to see a live Canvas integration or your own LMS equivalent.
  • Complex courses: Check how the tool handles cross-listed, team-taught, late-start, and clinical courses.
  • Anonymity controls: Look for a minimum number of responders before a report appears, especially for small classes.
  • Reporting by role: Instructors, chairs, and deans need different views, plus trends across terms. Review how the built-in reports and dashboards work.
  • Comment analysis: Open-text feedback is the hardest part to read at scale, so ask how themes and flagged comments are produced.
  • Compliance: Ask for FERPA handling, an accessibility conformance report, and data location details.
  • Support and pricing: Ask about implementation help, contract length, and whether pricing follows enrollment.

Course evaluation software comparison: 8 Platforms at a glance

The table below summarizes what each vendor states about its own product. The “best fit” column is our editorial judgment, so treat it as a starting shortlist. We reviewed vendor pages in October 2026, and most do not publish prices.

Platform Type LMS integrations named by vendor Standout strength Best fit
QuestionPro Survey platform Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, D2L Brightspace Evaluations and other research on one platform Institutions running many survey types
Qualtrics Survey platform Offered, confirm depth Research-grade survey and analytics tools Research-heavy universities
SurveyMonkey General survey tool Confirm during demo Fast setup Single instructors and pilots
Watermark Course Evaluations and Surveys Dedicated Canvas, Blackboard, others Results feed faculty reviews Colleges wanting a purpose-built tool
Explorance Blue Dedicated Canvas, Blackboard Complex-course automation and AI comment analysis Large or multi-campus institutions
Anthology Evaluate Dedicated LMS agnostic through LTI Nationally normed instruments Schools that want benchmark data
SmartEvals Dedicated Canvas Response-rate tracking and instructor tools Teams wanting a focused evaluation tool
Scantron Class Climate Dedicated Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, D2L, Sakai Online, paper, and hybrid delivery Campuses still using paper

Which survey platforms run course evaluations?

Research and survey suites can run course evaluations as one survey type. They suit institutions that also need alumni, accreditation, and campus-climate surveys in one place. For that wider view, see our guide to the best survey software for universities.

QuestionPro

QuestionPro runs evaluations as surveys on a general research platform rather than as a specialist evaluation product. Its academic pages describe Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, and D2L Brightspace integrations built on LTI, so students reach the evaluation without a separate login.

  • Canvas delivery: Instructors attach a survey as an assignment for a whole course or specific sections. They can add due dates and participation credit.
  • Blackboard and Brightspace: An optional LTI 1.3 setup passes participation scores to the gradebook.
  • Data and security: QuestionPro lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, GDPR and FERPA alignment, and eight data center regions including the US, EU, and Canada.
  • Pricing: The academic offer includes assured pricing for contracts up to five years and migration help from Qualtrics, Alchemer, and SurveyMonkey.

The tradeoff is scope. It does not offer nationally normed instruments or paper scanning, so schools needing those should shortlist Anthology or Class Climate. Explore QuestionPro for academic institutions alongside its survey software for the research side.

Qualtrics

Qualtrics is a research-grade survey platform with a large question library, enterprise security, and LMS connections. Large research universities with analytics staff may run evaluations there because they already hold a license.

Cost is the usual concern. QuestionPro’s own analysis of buyer-reported contracts puts typical annual renewal uplifts at 5% to 9%, with a move to multi-year terms. Treat that as a competitor’s estimate and request an itemized quote. For a full side-by-side, read QuestionPro vs Qualtrics for higher education.

SurveyMonkey

SurveyMonkey is a general survey tool with fast setup and familiar templates. It works for one instructor gathering informal feedback or a small pilot.

  • Strength: Quick to launch with no IT project.
  • Limit: It was built as a general survey tool, so confirm roster sync, LMS embedding, and department-level rollups before using it for institution-wide evaluations.

Free form builders such as Google Forms share the same limits and fit pilots only.

Which dedicated platforms handle course evaluations best?

Dedicated platforms do one job: course evaluations for higher education. They usually bring deep roster automation and reporting built around instructors, chairs, and deans. Five stand out in 2026.

Watermark Course Evaluations and Surveys

Watermark offers a purpose-built evaluation product for higher education. Its page highlights LMS integration with Canvas and Blackboard, mobile access, real-time reporting, and use of evaluation input in faculty reviews.

  • Best for: Colleges that want a focused evaluation tool with LMS delivery.
  • Reported result: Roanoke-Chowan Community College says its response rate rose from the 30% range to 83% after its first semester. This is a customer testimonial, not a guarantee.
  • Watch for: Pricing is not published, so request a quote based on your enrollment.

Explorance Blue

Explorance Blue targets institutions with messy course structures. It automates cross-listed, team-taught, and variable-length courses, and a Data Integrity Gateway merges or splits courses and fixes roster gaps.

Students can respond by email, text message, QR code, LMS portal, or printout. Privacy thresholds protect anonymity, and a Response Rate Monitor tracks progress during the window. An add-on called MLY analyzes comments for themes, sentiment, and alerts such as threats or safety concerns.

Explorance reports 14 million students engaged and a typical 74% response rate. Those are vendor figures, so ask for results from institutions that match your size. It lists SIS connections to Ellucian and PeopleSoft, plus Canvas and Blackboard.

Anthology Evaluate

Anthology Evaluate is the current name for Anthology Course Evaluations, which many schools still know as EvaluationKIT. Its distinguishing feature is the IDEA System, a set of nationally normed evaluation instruments with adjustments for external influences.

  • Integration: The vendor calls it LMS agnostic and lists LTI support, a standard that lets tools plug into an LMS.
  • Reporting: It offers a dashboard, automated administration, and timely feedback reports.
  • Customers named: Western Michigan University, Sam Houston State University, and Auburn University, among others.

SmartEvals

SmartEvals is a Buffalo, New York company focused on online course evaluations. Its materials describe anonymous responses, automatic collection, real-time response-rate tracking, and links to student information systems.

An instructor feature called My Focus supports teaching improvement over time. The vendor describes a Canvas integration but gives few technical details, so ask exactly how rosters and links reach students.

Scantron Class Climate

Class Climate is the strongest fit for campuses that still run paper. It supports online, paper, and hybrid evaluations, with institution-wide templates and optional instructor-specific questions.

  • LMS list: Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, D2L, and Sakai.
  • Course types: It can evaluate team-taught and cross-listed courses as one entity.
  • Accessibility: The vendor states WCAG 2.2 Level AA conformance and offers a VPAT, a document describing accessibility support.
  • Extras: A SelfScore module adds student self-evaluation of learning outcomes.

Which course evaluation software fits your institution?

Fit depends on size, course complexity, and what else you survey. The shortlist below is an editorial starting point based on each vendor’s stated features. Test every finalist against your own rosters.

Your situation Shortlist Why
Evaluations plus alumni, accreditation, and research surveys QuestionPro, Qualtrics One platform for many survey types
Community college on Canvas with a small IR team Watermark, SmartEvals, Anthology Evaluate Purpose-built setup with lower admin load
Multi-campus university with cross-listed and team-taught courses Explorance Blue, Class Climate Both state support for these course types
You need nationally normed benchmarks Anthology Evaluate IDEA System instruments
Some courses still use paper Class Climate, Explorance Blue Both list paper or printout delivery
One instructor or a one-semester pilot SurveyMonkey or a free form Low cost, low governance

What response rate do course evaluations need?

A usable response rate depends on class size, because small classes need a much higher share to represent the group. Nulty’s 2008 study in Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education gives required rates under two standards. The loose standard accepts a 10% sampling error at 80% confidence. The strict standard requires 3% error at 95% confidence.

  • Class of 20: 58% (loose) or 97% (strict).
  • Class of 50: 35% or 93%.
  • Class of 100: 21% or 87%.
  • Class of 200: 12% or 77%.
  • Class of 500: 5% or 58%.

Nulty’s full table assumes random sampling, which real evaluations rarely achieve. Use the numbers as a floor for trust, not a guarantee.

How do you raise course evaluation response rates?

Online evaluations usually draw lower response than paper. A Faculty Focus summary puts online rates at 50% to 60% and paper at 70% to 80%.

Faculty action closes much of the gap. In a survey by Goodman, Anson, and Belcheir, courses where instructors did nothing averaged about 50% completion. Any encouragement lifted the average to 63%, and reminders reached 61%.

Incentives produced the largest gain, and points worth 0.25% to 1% of the course grade were the most common type. Explaining how past results improved teaching also helped, at 57%. Software supports these habits through reminders that stop after a student responds and delivery inside the LMS.

How do you pilot course evaluation software?

A one-term pilot exposes problems no demo will show. Run it on real data with real users, and set the pass criteria before you start.

  1. Select 15 to 30 course sections across at least three departments. Include one cross-listed and one team-taught course.
  2. Load real rosters from your SIS and time how long setup takes.
  3. Deliver the evaluation through your LMS with reminders switched on.
  4. Check the anonymity threshold in your smallest class.
  5. Compare response rates with the prior term, using the Nulty targets above.
  6. Ask one instructor, one chair, and one dean to find an actionable insight in their report view.
  7. Request a written quote covering licenses, implementation, support, and contract term.

What do real results look like?

Vendor-reported results show the range, but treat each as one institution’s experience. Ask any vendor for references from schools with similar enrollment and LMS setups.

  • Roanoke-Chowan Community College: Reported a jump from the 30% range to 83% after switching to Watermark, per a customer testimonial on the vendor’s site.
  • UNLV: Explorance cites a 75%-plus response rate in a case study.
  • Alamo Colleges: Explorance reports automating more than 9,000 course evaluations.
  • Illustrative scenario: QuestionPro’s composite case study describes a fictional university moving from about 42% to 72% response and cutting report turnaround from three weeks to under three days. It is not an audited customer result.

What compliance questions should you ask vendors?

Compliance questions belong in the pilot, not after signing. Three topics matter most for US institutions: student privacy, accessibility, and data location.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects student education records at institutions that receive federal funds. Ask how the vendor limits access to identifiable responses and whether it acts as a school official under your agreement.

Accessibility is a growing deadline. The Department of Justice Title II web rule sets WCAG 2.1 AA conformance as the standard. Governments with populations of 50,000 or more must comply by April 26, 2027, after an April 2026 interim rule moved the dates. A state university uses its state’s population. Request each vendor’s accessibility conformance report.

Finally, confirm where the vendor stores data. Some vendors offer regional hosting for institutions with residency rules.

What mistakes weaken a course evaluation program?

Most failures come from process, not software. These seven mistakes appear again and again.

  • Buying on demo polish: Demos hide roster errors and weak instructor reports. Pilot instead.
  • Skipping edge cases: Cross-listed, team-taught, and late-start courses break manual workflows.
  • Treating scores as the verdict: These ratings can be biased against women and people of color and should not be the only evidence of teaching quality.
  • Weighting thin data: The same statement says items with low response rates deserve little weight.
  • Ignoring small-class anonymity: Students hold back honest comments when they can be identified.
  • Surveying students too often: Stagger evaluation windows so students do not face several surveys at once.
  • Never closing the loop: If students never see changes, participation falls each term.

Pick the platform that turns feedback into action

The best course evaluation software is the one students finish and faculty use. Delivery inside the LMS, reliable rosters, and clear role-based reports matter more than any feature list.

Start with a shortlist of two or three platforms that match your course structure. Pilot them on real sections, measure response against class-size targets, and read the reports as an instructor would. Choose the tool that gets useful feedback to faculty while the course can still improve.

Before you sign, confirm three things:

  • Rosters sync from your SIS without manual uploads.
  • Reports reach instructors, chairs, and deans in the right views.
  • The vendor can name a similar institution as a reference.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much does course evaluation software cost?

Most dedicated vendors do not publish prices, and the pages we reviewed list none. Quotes usually depend on enrollment, modules, and contract length. Ask for itemized costs covering licenses, implementation, support, and renewal increases before you compare vendors.

Can I use Google Forms for course evaluations?

You can for a small pilot, but it is a general form builder. Check roster sync, reminders that stop after completion, anonymity thresholds, and department reporting. Institution-wide programs usually need those controls to meet governance and privacy expectations.

How do reminders work if evaluations are anonymous?

Good platforms track who has completed a survey separately from what they answered. Reminders then stop for finished students without revealing answers. Some vendors, such as Explorance, also apply privacy thresholds so reports hide results from very small groups.

Can the software handle team-taught and cross-listed courses?

Some can. Explorance Blue and Scantron Class Climate both state support for these course types. Ask every vendor to demonstrate one cross-listed and one team-taught course from your own data, including how results roll up to each instructor.

Should evaluation scores decide tenure or promotion?

No, not on their own. The American Sociological Association recommends using student ratings as one part of a holistic review alongside peer observation, teaching materials, and instructor reflection. It also advises against comparing individual instructors to department averages.
