Already weighted your survey data? Import weighting gets it on the dashboard.

what-is-import-weighting

Bring weights you calculated elsewhere straight into your BI dashboard, no rebuilding required. If you are asking, “What is import weighting?” it is a QuestionPro BI feature that lets you upload your external weight values and apply them directly to your reports without re-creating your logic from scratch.

The weighting work you already finished

A statistician on your team spent two days building a weighting model.

The numbers are solid. The methodology is approved. The file sits ready in a spreadsheet. And now someone has to get those exact values into the dashboard the whole company is about to look at.

For many teams, that last step means exporting survey data and pasting columns by hand. Then it means hoping the row order still lines up after three rounds of edits. One shifted row, and the whole weighting scheme quietly breaks. Nobody notices until a number looks wrong in a meeting.

Import weighting ensures that the last step is no longer the riskiest part of the process.

What is import weighting?

Import weighting is a QuestionPro BI feature that lets you download a template and fill it with weight values you calculated outside the platform. Upload it back in, and it becomes a working weighting scheme.

It exists for one specific situation: your weighting math has already been done elsewhere. That might be a statistician’s model, an agency’s standard method, or a process your organization has used for years. Import weighting is the bridge between that external work and your BI dashboard, not another way to calculate weights from scratch.

Why teams need an import path at all

Not every weighting workflow starts inside a dashboard tool, and it shouldn’t have to.

Some research programs rely on a specific statistical process that a BI platform will never replicate exactly. Other teams inherit a house method used across all studies for a decade. Either way, the values are already trusted. What is usually missing is a clean way to get them where the reporting actually happens.

Without that path, weighting turns into a manual relay race. Someone calculates values in a spreadsheet. Someone else exports the survey data, and a third person tries to rebuild the logic inside whatever tool renders the dashboard. Each handoff is a chance for something to drift out of sync.

How import weighting actually works

The workflow lives in the same weightings area as every other weighting scheme in QuestionPro BI.

You start a new scheme, choose Import weighting, select the data source your weights apply to, and give the scheme a clear name. From there, you choose CSV or Excel and download the blank template for that data source. The template already reflects your records, so you are filling in values rather than building a file from scratch.

Enter your weight values in the downloaded file, save it, and upload the completed template. QuestionPro BI processes the file and builds the scheme, with a progress panel confirming when it is ready to use.

If your values change later, you do not start over. Open the scheme, select Re-upload, download a fresh template, update the numbers, and upload again. The new values replace the old ones inside the same scheme.

Import weighting in action

Picture a US-based consumer packaged goods brand running an annual customer satisfaction study.

Its research team uses an in-house weighting model that accounts for purchase frequency and regional distribution in ways specific to that business. The model lives outside QuestionPro, and it is not going anywhere.

Instead of rebuilding that logic inside the dashboard tool, the team downloads the import template, drops in the model’s output values, and uploads the file. The dashboard goes live using weights the team already trusts, with no manual recalculation inside BI.

A Canadian financial services firm does the same thing with a regulatory-driven weighting method its compliance team requires for every customer survey. The math never has to leave the process that approved it.

Who import weighting is built for

This feature is built for a very specific kind of team, and it shows.

If you work with a statistician or a research operations group that already owns weighting methodology, this feature keeps that expertise in place. Nobody has to switch to a new calculation method. If you are a BI analyst who just needs the dashboard to reflect approved numbers, it means one clean upload instead of a manual rebuild. And if your organization follows a fixed, audited weighting process, that process stays exactly as documented. You just get faster access to the reporting layer.

The advantages of import weighting

Here is what the workflow actually buys your team.

  • External flexibility lets any weighting methodology reach your dashboard, since QuestionPro BI does not dictate how the values are calculated.
  • Template-based accuracy reduces manual entry errors by matching the download directly to your data source’s records.
  • CSV and Excel support covers the file formats most statistical teams already work in day-to-day.
  • Re-upload without rebuilding means updated weight values replace old ones inside the same scheme, not a new one.
  • Dashboard-level or widget-level application gives you the same placement control as any other weighting scheme in BI.

When to use it, and when to reach for something else

Import weighting earns its place when the math is already done somewhere else and trusted.

Reach for it when your weighting values come from an external statistical process, an agency deliverable, or a standard method your organization already runs. It is also the right call when a compliance or methodology requirement means the calculation itself cannot move into a different tool.

Reach for a different option if you have not yet calculated your target proportions. In that case, cell-based weighting or raked weighting inside QuestionPro BI can build the scheme for you, no external file required. And if your raw response data is already close enough to your target audience, you may not need a weighting scheme at all.

How to turn on import weighting in QuestionPro BI

The whole workflow stays inside the platform once your file is ready.

Open Weightings from the BI navigation panel, start a new scheme, and choose Import weighting. Full click-by-click steps, including the widget and dashboard application settings, are in the QuestionPro help center article on import weighting.

Get started

Good weighting work should not get lost in translation between the tool that calculated it and the tool that reports it.

Import weighting keeps your team’s approved methodology intact and gets it into the dashboard without a manual rebuild. If you are ready to bring your own weight values into QuestionPro BI, create a QuestionPro account and open the Weightings tab. If your studies also need weighting built from scratch within the platform, cell-based weighting is worth a look.

Frequently asked questions

What file formats does import weighting accept?

CSV and Excel. You choose the format when you download the blank template, and you can switch formats later by re-uploading with a different file type.

Does import weighting calculate weight values for me?

No. Import weighting brings in values you already calculated outside QuestionPro BI. If you need the platform to build a scheme from target proportions, cell-based or raked weighting is a better starting point.

Can I update my weight values after the scheme is already created?

Yes. Open the scheme, select Re-upload, download a fresh template, enter the updated values, and upload it. The new values replace the previous ones in that same scheme.

Can import weighting apply to just one widget instead of the whole dashboard?

Yes. Open the widget’s settings panel, go to the Analytics tab, set the scheme type to Widget, and select your imported scheme from the dropdown. Other widgets on the dashboard stay unaffected.

Can I apply an imported scheme across an entire dashboard?

Yes. Open the dashboard settings, go to the Weightings tab, select your imported scheme from the dropdown, and save. It then applies across the full dashboard.

Does the template already know which records I am weighting?

Yes. The template is generated from the data source you select before you download it. Its structure matches your records, so you are not building a file from scratch.

Do I need a specific plan to use import weighting?

Import weighting is part of QuestionPro’s BI Stats capability. For details on what is included with your account, check with your account admin or reach out to QuestionPro support.

What happens if I upload a file with the wrong format or missing values?

QuestionPro BI processes the file during upload and flags any issues it finds. You can correct the template and re-upload before the scheme is finalized.
