What a time it is for African Americans to be represented in comic book movies, today’s most popular film genre. The ending of Avengers Endgame strongly suggests the next Captain America will be Black, while Black Panther remains the highest-grossing solo superhero movie ($1,346,913,161 globally).

Police brutality and gun violence: These two stark issues seem to be the bookends in the daily narratives of many African-Americans. On the side of police abuse, a notorious example occurred just last May when Phoenix police officers with drawn weapons traumatized a Black family in a parking lot because their 4-year-old girl had allegedly shoplifted a “Barbie-like” doll….

The global media and entertainment market has consistently been on the rise. Revenue is projected to reach up to $2.2 Trillion by 2021, according to a report published by Statista. The gaming market is an ever-growing and integral segment. 78% of the global gaming revenues in 2017 came from the worlds two biggest gaming regions, North America and Asia-Pacific.

The richest man in history was a king named Mansa Musa, who ruled most of western Africa in the 14th century. King Musa possessed so much wealth that merely to travel he would be accompanied by a 60,000-strong caravan comprised of 1,000 attendants, 100 camels loaded with gold, bands of personal musicians, and 500 slaves bearing golden staffs….

#MeToo is arguably the most impactful and publicized movement in recent times. It has brought down kings and made new queens who wear thorny crowns of past trauma. It has radically changed pop culture dialogue while deconstructing rules of interpersonal engagement in all mediums.
#MeToo has affected African American kingdoms as well, or more like razed them with results that are still unclear.

But what about the guys? Could we expect the tropes of simplicity and predictability with regard to African-American males and the same subjects? Again, the results were surprising and complex….
