How does the link lane concept work to connect to external data?

I would like to connect external data sources to my journey map. How do I use link lanes to do this?

Here are the steps: CX>>Journey Management>>Create a New Journey>>Add Links Screenshot>>Link lane.

Here, you will need to toggle on the "External Link" by adding a label to this and adding a URL.

Automatically populate metrics swim lane with external data

Is there a way to have an auto transfer of data from external systems into the metrics swim lane of a Journey Map? I know QP Surveys do this. Do we have any APIs for other data to do the same thing?
