Developer Settings
What is Developer Settings?
The Developer Settings page is where you manage programmatic access to your QuestionPro account. QuestionPro API is a way of connecting external applications to QuestionPro.
- API: Manage your API key and review a log of the API calls made with it.
How to access the QuestionPro API credentials
- Log in to your QuestionPro account.
- Click your profile icon and go to My Account.
- Click the Developer Settings tab.
- Under the API tab you will be able to access your QuestionPro API key.
What is the QuestionPro API?
The QuestionPro API lets you connect your QuestionPro account to other applications and scripts. You can use it to retrieve surveys and responses, manage users, and automate tasks without logging in to the platform. Every API request is authenticated with an API key that is unique to your user account.
The
API tab is where you turn API access on or off, manage your API key, and review a log of every API call made with your key.
What is an API key?
An API key is a unique string that identifies you when your application calls the QuestionPro API. Each key belongs to an individual QuestionPro user, and only one key is allowed per user.
Note: Your API key gives access to your QuestionPro account, so keep it safe and don't share it publicly.
How to enable or disable API access
Use the Status toggle at the top of the API tab.
- Active: API requests made with your key are accepted.
- Inactive: API requests made with your key are not processed. Your key is not deleted, so you can switch back to Active at any time.
To change the status:
- Go to My Account >> Developer Settings >> API.
- Under Status, click Active or Inactive.
Note: If an integration suddenly stops working, check that the status is set to Active.
How to view and copy your API key
For security, your API key is masked by default.
- Click the eye icon in the API key field to show or hide the key.
- Click the copy icon to copy the key to your clipboard.
How to regenerate your API key
If your key has been exposed, or you want to rotate it as a security practice, you can generate a new one.
- Go to My Account >> Developer Settings >> API.
- Click Regenerate API key.
- Confirm when prompted.
- Copy your new key and update it in every application or script that uses it.
Note: Regenerating your key invalidates the previous key. Any integration still using the old key will stop working until you update it.
What are API logs?
The Logs section of the API tab lists the API calls made with your key. Use it to audit activity, confirm an integration is working, and troubleshoot errors. Total API calls at the top of the section shows the number of calls in the selected date range.
What information is shown in the logs?
The log table includes the following columns:
- ID: Unique ID of the API call. Click the ID to see details of that call.
- Timestamp: Date and time the call was made.
- IP Address: IP address the request came from.
- API URL: The endpoint that was called, for example https://api.questionpro.com/a/api/v2/surveys/{surveyID}.
- Response Status: The HTTP status code returned for the call.
What do the response statuses mean?
For a list of response and error codes and what they mean, refer to the Error Codes section of the QuestionPro API documentation.
How to search the logs
Type a full or partial API URL or a log ID in the Search by API URL or log ID box. The table filters as you type.
How to filter logs by date
- Click the date range selector, which shows the last 30 days by default.
- Choose a start and end date.
- The log table and the Total API calls count update to show only calls in that range.
How to export API logs
- Set the date range you want to export.
- Click Export API Logs.
The logs are exported as an
.xlsx file and saved to your device. Use exported logs for audits, usage reports, or sharing with your security team.
How do I know if an API call failed?
Find the call in the Logs table and check its Response Status. Any status other than 2xx means the request wasn't completed successfully. Click the call's ID to see more details, and use the search box to find a specific endpoint or survey ID.
Why did my integration stop working?
Check these common causes:
- The API status is set to Inactive.
- The API key was regenerated and the integration is still using the old key.
- The requested survey or user ID doesn't exist or isn't available to you (404).
Best practices for keeping your API key secure
- Never share your key publicly or include it in source code repositories.
- Store it in environment variables or a secrets manager.
- Regenerate it periodically and immediately if you suspect it's been exposed.
- Review the logs regularly for unfamiliar IP addresses or unexpected endpoints.
- Set the status to Inactive when you aren't using API integrations.
